The first project was to reproduce the famous shoulder bag used by Indiana Jones during the three movies. This period bag was British - An authentic Pattern 37 World War II Mark VII Box Gas Mask Bag. The Mark VII was issued, from 1941 onwards, to troops and civilians alike in preparation for Nazi chemical attack. The earlier Mark VI version of the bag is also believed to be used in some scenes of the second film. The original webbing straps of these bags, shown here, were replaced with a longer adjustable 65 by 1 leather strap for the movies. Thus far, the search for the screen accurate buckle for this strap has eluded collectors. We can offer a custom-made nickel coated cast brass buckle that best resembles the one used in the first film.
You can purchase this buckle, either individually, or complete with 65 leather strap and a screwable fastener (Chicago screw - for easy attachment and detachment). A 72 version of the strap is available for any would-be adventurer over 6’ in height - this strap may offer better buckle placement.
The strap will fit directly onto your Mark VII Gas Mask Bag - see here for details.
Your first stop in finding the bag might be to try any of the vendors listed on our links page, your local army surplus store, or as a last resort - ebay...
